Hi, my name is Dr. Clayton Deighan. I am running for Wooster City School Board and I’m asking for your vote this fall on November 4th!
I am excited about the opportunity to serve the Wooster community and to make a positive difference.
MY WHY… Education has always been very important to me. I am running for school board because I believe every child deserves a safe, high-quality public education. As a parent with young children entering the school system soon and as an alumni myself, I can tell you I care deeply about the future of Wooster City Schools and creating safe, excellent schools for our children. I am proud to say my wife and I are raising 3RD GENERATION Wooster Generals here in our hometown of Wooster!
My Top Priorities:
- Ensuring a safe and healthy, high-quality learning environment for our students, teachers and staff.
- Fighting for and defending our Public School Funding.
- The Wooster City Schools Master Facilities Plan- with two failed school levies I believe COMMUNICATION, TRANSPARENCY and TRUST must improve in the community to continue to build a bright future for our children. I support transparency and a well-thought out plan for ALL stakeholders.
- Fiscal responsibility.
Clayton has the Experience and Tools for the Job:
* A Doctorate degree (PhD) & Master’s (M.S.) in Chemical Engineering from The Ohio State University and a Bachelor’s of Science (B.S.) degree in Chemical Engineering from Miami University of Ohio
*Hands-on Experience in the Management of People and Business Operations- Strong Interpersonal Skills & Communication Skills which will be an asset to the board.

*Experience teaching as an instructor and teaching assistant for undergraduate level engineering college courses.

Right now more than ever is such a critical and important time to get involved- our public schools are under attack at the federal and state level. Our schools, once safe havens for learning, are facing new challenges. The radical changes you hear about in education nationally are happening right here. No matter where you stand on the political spectrum it is clear that the coming years will be one of great change with how our public schools are funded. We are already hearing about federal funding freezes, no growth state funding plans, and even campaigns starting to repeal property taxes in Ohio, a decision with massive consequences for our local public school funding. I will fight for and defend our public school funding.
As a well-respected scientist/engineer in my field, I am known for being a dependable leader and trusted colleague. My excellent communication skills- both oral and interpersonal skills are what sets me apart from other candidates, you will find I am honest and direct. Additionally, over my education and career I have developed a variety of leadership and communication skills that will allow me to be an impactful member of the board. In leadership roles in college and graduate school I completed training on conflict resolution, negotiation, crisis management and emotional intelligence. In my career I have developed excellent communication and public speaking skills, I routinely present scientific technical information as the senior leadership for my company to audiences of all sizes at conferences across the U.S. and internationally. I have expertise and experience in negotiation, contract review and solution sourcing. With almost 4 years of senior management experience I currently manage a team of scientists as the North America Sales & Scientific Applications Manager. Your vote will allow me to put these skills to work to serve the community so that we can continue to build a bright future together for the children and taxpayers of Wooster City Schools.
My position on facilities:
If elected I will prioritize efficient use of our precious resources. Students should have access to schools which are safe, clean and appropriate for their learning level. I will take into account the technical reports, community feedback, and financial constraints when planning for the next generation of facilities to serve Wooster City Schools.
